Based in Yackandandah, Yack Pilates Tribe is a place to come together with your community to build both inner and outer strength. We offer Mat Pilates classes.

Our ethos intertwines movement, breath, and mindfulness, as we feel that Pilates is both a form of exercise and strength training, as well as a meditative practice and a tool for focusing the mind.

About your instructor

Hi, I’m Gem King. As a qualified Mat and Reformer Pilates Instructor, I want to help others to achieve their health and fitness ambitions in a gentle warm and welcoming environment. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core and giving great stability, which in turns aids the strengthening of all other muscles. Pilates is a form of meditation in my opinion because the emphasis is entirely on the present moment and the coordinated movement of the muscles and breath, as opposed to the busyness of daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Classes are held at the Uniting Church Hall, 25 Hammond St Yackandandah (opposite Yackandandah Primary School).

  • Yes, our classes are suited to all levels and each person will be given care and attention to ensure they’re following along and feeling comfortable throughout the class.

  • Pilates and yoga are both mind-body practices, but they differ in focus and approach. Pilates focuses on core strength, stability, and controlled movements using specialised equipment or mat exercises. It aims to improve posture, flexibility, and muscle tone through targeted exercises. In contrast, yoga combines physical postures, breath control, and meditation to promote holistic well-being, spiritual awareness, and flexibility.

  • Mat Pilates improves core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. We use body weight and props as tools to strengthen all areas of your body. It improves your posture and balance, and is an amazing way to stay strong and mobile in all phases of life.

  • Our classes are 1 hour long, including an end-of-session stretch.

  • Opt for comfortable workout attire that allows for movement. Bring a water bottle and your fine self.

  • No, our mats are provided for you, as are all the tools you’ll need during class. We also provide sterilising spray and a cloth, and ask that each attendee wipes down his or her mat and props at the end of each class.

  • Pilates is highly adaptable, so injury or disability need not be a limitation in most cases. At the start of each class, we will ask each attendee about the state of their body and wellbeing. If you’re suffering from any injuries or disabilities, we can modify the exercises to ensure that your body is protected while you still get a great workout. If you are ill with a virus, however, we do ask that you please stay home to protect the other class participants.

  • Pilates Mat is a wonderful exercise option during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, it is important to note that it is not advisable for the second and third trimesters.

  • There are limited spots available, so if you are unable to attend we ask that you give us 12 hours notice. This will give us enough time to fill your spot. If you do not give us 12 hours notice, we charge a 50% cancellation fee. Exceptions can be made in the case of emergencies. Please do not hesitate to contact us in this instance.
